China Unicom, one of the biggest telecom companies in China, was incorporated in Hong Kong and listed on both the New York Stock Exchange and the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong.
China Unicom is engaged in GSM cellular business in whole China, the provision of international and domestic calls, data and mobile Internet services. China Union total has over 150,000 GSM base stations and had 135 million subscribers for its GSM mobile businesses (February 2009).
It is also a leading broadband and land line telecommunications operator in north of China since it merged with China Netcom in 2008. It provides fixed-line voice services, broadband and Internet access services, data communications services and more.
On 7 January 2009 China Unicom received 3G license based on WCDMA format and started its 3G network construction. In May 2009, China Unicom will start its 3G service.
