3G

3G is the third generation of telecommunication standard. Third generation wireless employ wideband frequency carriers and a CDMA air interface. It is based on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) family of standards under the IMT-2000. 3G networks are wide-area cellular telephone networks that evolved to incorporate high-speed Internet access and video telephony.

Airtime

Actual time spent talking on the mobile phone. In China most mobile phones are prepaid and its airtime depends the prepaid amount.

Bandwidth

A rate of data transfer, throughput, measured in bits per second.

Base Station

The radio transmitter/receiver that supports communications with mobile phone within special range.

Bluetooth

An open wireless protocol for exchanging data over short distances from fixed and mobile devices, creating personal area networks (PANs).

CDMA

2G Mobile Telecommunications Standard that uses CDMA (Code division multiple access), a multiple access scheme for digital radio, to send voice, data and signaling data (such as a dialed telephone number) between mobile telephones and base stations.

CDMA 2000

A 3G technology of mobile telecommunications standards.

GSM

GSM (Global System for Mobile communications ) is a digital cellular phone technology that uses TDMA. The GSM standard has been deployed at three different frequency bands: 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 1900 MHz. GSM is the most popular standard for mobile phones in the world.

GPRS (General Packet Radio Service)

GPRS is a packet oriented mobile data service available to users of the 2G cellular communication systems global system for mobile communications (GSM). In the 2G systems, GPRS provides data rates of 56-114 kbit/s.

Roaming

Roaming is a general term that refers to the extending of connectivity service in a location that is different from the home location where the service was registered. Higher per-minute rates are usually charged for calls made or received while roaming. Long distance rates and a daily access fee may also apply.

SMS

The transmission of short text messages to and from a mobile phone, fax machine and/or IP address.

SIM Card

A Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) on a removable SIM Card securely stores the service-subscriber key (IMSI) used to identify a subscriber on mobile telephony devices (such as computers and mobile phones). The SIM card allows users to change phones by simply removing the SIM card from one mobile phone and inserting it into another mobile phone or broadband telephony device.

TD-CDMA

A 3G proposal combining elements of TDMA and CDMA.

Tri-Band

A network infrastructure or wireless phone designed to operate in three frequency bands: 800 MHz, 900 MHz and 1800MHz.

Tri-Mode

Phones that work on three modes GSM, TDMA and analog.

WCDMA

WCDMA is an air interface found in 3G mobile telecommunications networks. WCDMA is the higher speed transmission protocol used in the Japanese FOMA system and in the UMTS system, a third generation follow-on to the 2G GSM networks deployed worldwide.

WAP

WAP is an open international standard for application layer network communications in a wireless communication environment. Its main use is to enable access to the Internet (HTTP) from a mobile phone or PDA.
